Dr Radcliffe accepts referrals in all areas of allergy medicine including food allergy and intolerance, rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, anaphylaxis, drug allergy, rubber latex allergy, venom allergy, urticaria (hives), angioedema (swellings), eczema and dermatitis.
Two tests are commonly used, the Skin Prick Test and the Specific IgE Blood Test (previously known as RAST). However, whilst allergy is unlikely when these tests are negative, a positive result only means that allergen-specific IgE is present (i.e. the immune system has become sensitised) it does not diagnose the allergy.
This is why allergy tests can be unsafe if interpreted by people who have had no training in allergy.
Dr Michael Radcliffe is one of a small number of consultant physicians in the UK with General Medical Council specialist accreditation in allergy medicine. He was formerly Senior Consultant to the Allergy Service at University College London Hospitals and runs a regular allergy clinic at the BMI Sarum Road Hospital in Winchester (Hampshire). He is currently (November 2020) holding consultations by telephone.
Virtual Allergy Clinics
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Radcliffe will remain available by telephone consultation in place of face-to-face consultation.
According to the nature of the problem, if allergy tests are needed, these can be arranged at a distance, using blood samples taken either by pre-arrangement at a health facility, or by finger prick sample that you can easily take yourself in your own home and mail direct to the laboratory using a pre-paid postal pack.
