What Is Milk Allergy?

Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is an IgE-mediated immune response to proteins in cow's milk. It is one of the most common food allergies in young children, though many children outgrow it. In adults, it is less common but can persist.

It is important to distinguish milk allergy from lactose intolerance, which involves difficulty digesting lactose (milk sugar) and is not immune-mediated. Milk allergy involves the immune system reacting to milk proteins — primarily casein and whey.

Component testing can identify whether sensitisation is to heat-stable proteins (such as casein) or heat-labile proteins (such as alpha-lactalbumin), which may help inform dietary discussions with your specialist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still be allergic to milk if I can tolerate baked milk?

Some individuals with milk allergy can tolerate extensively heated (baked) milk products because heating denatures heat-labile whey proteins. Component testing for casein versus whey proteins may provide useful context for this discussion with your allergist.

Is goat's or sheep's milk safe if I'm allergic to cow's milk?

Not necessarily. There is significant cross-reactivity between cow, goat, and sheep milk proteins due to structural similarities. Your specialist can advise on safe alternatives based on your test results.

Do I need a GP referral for allergy testing?

No. You can book directly with our clinic without a GP referral. Simply choose your test and select a convenient appointment time. If you're unsure which test is right for your symptoms, our team can help guide your selection.

Do I need to stop taking antihistamines before a blood test?

No. Unlike skin prick testing, IgE blood tests are not affected by antihistamines or other allergy medications. You can continue taking your regular medications before your appointment.

What should I do with my results?

As a diagnostic-only clinic, we provide results directly to you. We recommend sharing them with your GP or allergist for interpretation and dietary management advice.
